The Spirit of a Portrait
Within each living thing is a light.
This is the light of the spirit.
It exists in everything and is everywhere.
The same spirit that is within me is within you,
but our conscious minds see separateness.
That separateness of physical likeness
Can be recorded by a camera or copied by a draftsman,
But that likeness is not you.
It has, in fact, all of the ingredients of you
Except the most important one: The Living Spirit.
I have devoted by ability as a portraitist to paint this Spirit,
The very life of the subject.
- John Solie
Procedures
First Choice:
Mr. Solie will travel to the client's home. He prefers two days with the subject. Sittings will be arranged to avoid fatigue for the subject. During the first day, the artist renders life color sketches and, on the second day, a photography session is held. Mr. Solie then returns to his studio to complete the portrait, which is then shipped to the client.
Second Choice:
The sitter(s) travel to the artist's Oregon Coast studio for two to three days. Accommodations will be provided. The house, guest house and studio are situated on a promontory with a 180 degree view overlooking the rugged coast and surging Pacific Ocean. A private stairway brings you down to the vast sandy beaches. Meals are not included. During the first day, the artist renders life color sketches and, on the second day, a photography session is held. The completed portrait is shipped to the client.
